  • THE METHOD OF CONTEMPLATION: THE CINEMA OF KAZUHIRO SODA

This year, the Festival dei Popoli dedicate the retrospective to Japanese film-maker Kazuhiro Soda, born in Ashikaga, Japan, in 1970. During his career, he has produced a corpus of absolutely fascinating works, mostly unseen in Italy. The “observational film series” is presented at Festival dei Popoli in its entirety. It offers an extraordinary portrayal of contemporary Japan, exploring the real country in its less known and less described aspects, such as its political system (viewed from the window of electoral campaigns), the conditions of psychiatric patients, the work of oyster fishers in the aftermath of Fukushima, or the ‘hidden nation’ of physical and psychiatric disabled persons. Through his films, always standing behind the camera, Soda has also composed a sort of self-portrait, a sophisticate journal of his gaze, his mind, and his sensitiveness. In cooperation with: Life Beyond Tourism and Centro Congressi al Duomo.

  • DOMINO EFFECT - DREAMS AND NIGHTMARES OF CONTEMPORARY POWER

Much has been written, said, and filmed on the ways power uses the image; much less on how images contribute to power, use it, perpetuate it, and question it. This is the journey we decided to embark on this year, finding connections and mechanisms, references and links between films that, in very different ways, analyse the domino effect of power. Domino Effect stems from the need of taking a break and making a reflection as well as sharing the anxiety caused by a power that generates ever more nightmares and fewer dreams. Domino Effect is a way to observe our times as a process made of interconnected facts – a process in which all of us are responsible and involved to some degree.

  • DOC AT WORK - CAMPUS

This year Doc at Work, our laboratory of ideas reserved for professionals, is focused on the work done by Italian film schools, in the belief that their activity plays a strategic role as regards not only training, but also the entire audio-visual sector. We believe film schools are like outposts that offer a vantage point on the work done by young talents as well as training grounds in which the new generations of cineastes are allowed to experiment. Doc at Work – Campus wishes to establish a dialogue with and support the activity of the most representative Italian schools. Therefore, we selected the films made in 2017 by students of the Turin Scuola Holden, the Milan Civica scuola di cinema Luchino Visconti, and the Naples Centro FilmaP – Atelier di Cinema del Reale. Festival dei Popoli is particularly proud to present these works and the young film-makers to the audience, press, professionals, and all our guest.

  • FESTIVAL DEI POPOLI AT THE INSTITUT FRANÇAIS OF FLORENCE

In collaboration with the French Embassy in Rome, Institut Français Italia and Institut Français of Florence.

  • MERIDIANO ZERO

The prime meridian of Peters’ map, where the world is represented according to the actual dimensions of the countries’ surfaces, runs 11°15’ east of the Greenwich Meridian. The prime line of longitude in the map that aims to reflect fairly the size of territories runs precisely through the city of Florence. In fact, it is also called the "Florence Meridian". Peters’ projection is a unique map that deserves special attention to places and populations to be found in the tropical zone of the planet. Also inspired by a quest for 'other, possible' points of view, the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation is glad to present a selection of films dedicated to the countries and themes in which the Italian Cooperation is involved.
