  • 7 PARDEH
    7 Veils

    Afghanistan, France 2017 80'
    Directed by: Sepideh Farsi
Afghanistan is very little known: a few commonplaces, the word Taliban, a war that has never stopped since the Soviet era, but seems to have taken a new course from 2001. We know that the country is devastated by a permanent state of war and its population is in great distress. With her camera, Sepideh Farsi aims at the heart of this country, piecing together a sensitive, subjective, and non-judgmental mosaic.

  • ALSO KNOWN AS JIHADI

    France 2017 102'
    Directed by: Eric Baudelaire
The possible story of a man, Aziz, told through the places he traversed: the clinic where he was born in the Parisian suburb of Vitry, the neighborhoods he grew up in, his schools and workplaces. Then, his departure to Egypt, Turkey and the road to Aleppo where he joined the ranks of the al Nusra Front. A journey tracked by a second storyline, made of extracts from a judicial archive: police interrogations, wiretaps, surveillance reports. Documents intertwined with images and sounds to compose a film that pertains less to a singular character, Aziz, than to the architectural, political, social and judicial landscapes in which his story unfolded.

  • ANATOMIA DEL MIRACOLO
    The Anatomy of a Miracle

    France, Italy 2017 83'
    Directed by: Alessandra Celesia
Exceeding all evidence and all natural laws, this is the ultimate substance of miracles. The spirit that animates the three leading characters of this film is similar: Giusy, a restless, free mind in a wheelchair-bound body; Fabiana, a transsexual who coordinates a community of believers; and Sue Song, a Korean pianist who came to Naples to communicate via her music. There is a fourth protagonist: the Madonna dell’Arco. She houses all the contradictions of these lives and impulses: violence and love, blasphemy and mercy, sorrow and hope, ancient and modern.

  • BOLI BANA

    Belgium 2017 60'
    Directed by: Simon Coulibaly Gillard
Boli Bana is a film about the Fulani tradition, its rites of passage, and the beliefs of an ethnic group without borders, spread all over the western part of Africa. Following the pace of nature as well as centuries-old rituals, it proposes an immersion of the senses in a universe whose roof is the starred sky and whose border is the circle of the fire that keeps the Fulani warm at night. All the members of this world, men and animals, are imprinted with a sign of belonging and identity.

  • DES MOUTONS ET DES HOMMES
    Of Sheep and Men

    Switzerland, France, Qatar 2017 78'
    Directed by: Karim Sayad
Immersed in a landscape constantly scorched by the sun and covered in dust, the film describes a contest that is rooted in a forgotten past but still very popular at present, in which Rams are set to fight against each other. An entire community of aficionados revolves around these rough, grisly games, with onlookers, some people betting, and others hoping to bring in the arena the next champion that will give them glory and money. Apparently, there is no room for tenderness in this archaic, all-male world save for the eyes of those who dream their future.

  • DUELO
    Duel

    Cuba 2017 12'
    Directed by: Alejandro Alonso Estrella
According to an ancient Caribbean ritual, manufacturing a wooden cross can placate the anxiety stemming from your inner demons - in Yoan’s case, the image of an absent father that haunts his daily. Therefore, Yoan is about to do so, encouraged by his mother. However, what might look like a normal depiction of an archaic ritual is just the starting point of a more intimate, mysterious story, made of silences, internal and external movements, gestures, and exorcisms.

Directed by: Sylvain Cruiziat, Mila Zhluktenko

If you live in countries like Yemen or Iraq, your movements may well have been considered suspicious, and your name included in a list along with other equally suspicious individuals. This is the first phase of a military programme that foresees the use of drones to find, fix, and finish specific human targets.

    France, Germany 2017 143'
    Directed by: Ben Russell
Beginning with a 600-meter descent into the depths of the earth, Good Luck shines a flashlight onto the human face of labor in the time-warp’d working conditions of an underground state-owned mine in Serbia. The hiss of oxygen cuts through the diesel rumble, the walls of the office vibrate with explosions two levels below; half-forgotten, these miners’ physical struggle finds its mirror a continent away – in the tropical heat of an illegal Surinamese gold mine. The water pumps roar under the blinding sun; silver liquid rolls across the hand of a miner as he adds mercury to dirt in a never-ending search for gold.

  • IL MONDO O NIENTE
    The World or Nothing

    France 2017 45'
    Directed by: Chiara Caterina
Chiara Caterina rides across a region, Basilicata, in search of its pieces of bitterness and wonder. She goes from the sky to the sea, from the grottos to the rivulets of toxic spill that seep into the soil cracks, from the wolves’ cries to wild boar hunting. She leaves all the unnecessary behind, cleaning her camera lens from the residues of superficiality to be able to immerse herself into those details that are as small as dense, and which, when juxtaposed, compose a fresh, hypnotic image of Basilicata.

    Italy 2017 57'
    Directed by: Enrico Maisto
Appeal Court of Assizes, Milan. Morning. An unfamiliar, empty room accommodates a few people summoned there, on that day, without grounds. Their eyes look dazed, the half exchanges between them are cautious. At this point, the viewer is wonderfully, unexpectedly let into an intricate world made of whispered comments, breaths, silences, questions, and quiet confessions from strangers to strangers. These are the fragments of faces and thoughts belonging to the unknown individuals chosen for the trial jury of the Milan Appeal Court of Assizes, that is working on the most well-known massacres and crimes of the past few decades in Italy.

  • LES CHANTS DE LA MALADRERIE
    Songs Next Door

    France 2017 26'
    Directed by: Flavie Pinatel
La Maladrerie is a social housing neighbourhood near Paris planned according to a utopia. The 900 apartments designed by Architect R. Gailhoustet are all different, just like the people who inhabit them. Today the building is decaying, but they idea from which they stemmed was innovative, i.e. that the place in which people live can affect their sociality. Just as the architect tried to see the lives of the others in a different way, the film director has looked for her own way to describe La Maladrerie and its complexity: by collecting the songs echoing between buildings and parks, trees and ponds, graffiti and ruined asphalt.

    Germany 2017 27'
    Directed by: Florian Kunert
According to the legend, for each child who is born in the world, a brother octopus in the depths of the Indonesian sea also appears. “He becomes our companion for life. We can neither kill nor eat any octopus. If we break this rule then we must ask for forgiveness, or else a gigantic octopus will emerge from the waters and bring misfortune upon us.”” The big transformations that are changing Indonesia are not so powerful and absolute as to erase traditions and legends. They survive in a sort of substratum and resurface all of a sudden, where you would least expect.

  • PALENQUE

    Colombia, USA 2017 26'
    Directed by: Sebastian Pinzon Silva
A small village in Colombia becomes the site of memory, a memory-musical. The film portrays both the archaic and daily gestures of the village inhabitants by way of ancient songs, sung by the people themselves. Extended long takes and a refined film direction transform San Basilio de Palenque, the first town in the Americas to have broken free from European domination, into a big musical set, somewhat reminiscent of the refined camera movements used by the great masters of musical.

  • SABOTEN TO NO KAIWA
    Conversation With a Cactus

    Japan, France, Germany 2017 45'
Directed by: Elise Florenty, Marcel Türkowsky
If a plant could talk, we wouldn’t be able to understand it. This was the biggest challenge – paraphrasing Wittgenstein, and substituting plants for lions – for doctor Ken Hashimoto, who tried to make cacti speak in the Seventies. None of his fantastic experiments ever obtained any acceptable results for science. If it is present on a crime scene, a cactus seems not be able to reveal the identity of the murderer.
