  • A Liar's autobiography
The Untrue Story of Monty Python's Graham Chapman

    United Kingdom 2012 85'
Directed by: Bill Jones, Jeff Simpson, Ben Timlett
Graham Chapman wrote a declaredly ‘imaginary’ autobiography. A few years before his death, he providentially recorded his own reading of his text. More than twenty years later, three different film-makers co-directed an animation film made of chapters that were produced by more than a dozen different production companies. That forgotten trace, Chapman’s voice, is the Leitmotiv and an elastic framework of their re-writing; the text serves as raw material of the narrative.

  • Ceremonin
    The Ceremony

    Sweden 2014 75'
    Directed by: Lina Mannheimer
Catherine Robbe-Grillet, a writer, photographer, and actress nearing her 85th birthday is the most wanted and famous dominatrix of France. The domain over which she exerts her power has very-well defined boundaries. They are erotic rituals, ceremonies, and performances, including S&M. The ambiguous, uncertain balance of the film leans on the alternation of a structure that refers to the canon of documentary (made of interviews and archive footage from Robbe-Grillet’s past) with sections about erotic encounters. The latter are formulated according to a considerably different style, more in line with fiction film. Here the camera is not tied to a static point of view but sinuously adapts to the stage-like bodies and liturgical gestures.

  • Dayana Minimarket

    France 2013 55'

Kamal and Nalini left India 30 years ago and started a new life in Paris. There they had three children, found a home, and set up a business. But now their great efforts to manage their minimarket seem to not be enough. The film transforms into an energetic Bollywood musical comedy where the protagonists dance and sing in a succession of asides worthy of the canon, musical.

  • De Schnuuf
    The Breath

    Switzerland 2014 11'
    Directed by: Fabian Kaiser
Deep in the belly of a maze made of dark tunnels and crowded with machineries move a group of men of a mysterious special team. In this short film, the objective recording of an ordinary activity is transformed into a vision that echoes the narrative codes and the pop iconography of the science fiction cinema of the 70s.

  • Fishtail

    USA 2014 65'
    Directed by: Andrew Renzi
Two men on horseback ride all alone toward the wide horizon of boundless prairies of Montana. Over these images is a melancholy melody and the voice of the narrator, Harry Dean Stanton. This is not a western, but it might well be. Andrew Renzi has composed a simple elegy that not only describes the rustic life of cowboys – an endangered anthropological species – but also pays tribute in terms of rhetoric to an entire film genre, The Western. This genre has contributed to shape the cowboy character in the collective imagination of modern occidental civilization.

  • I morti di Alos

    Italy 2011 32'
    Directed by: Daniele Atzeni
A completely abandoned Sardinian village becomes the setting of an apocalyptic story, the posthumous diary of an imagined disaster. In order to narrate it, the film director opted for a documentary style but enhanced the narrative with elements from the purest horror genre.

  • THE LAST BLACK SEA PIRATES

    Bulgaria 2013 72'
    Directed by: Svetoslav Stoyanov
This documentary chose to describe the daily life of the last true pirates left who are still chasing hidden treasures. It is the insightful chronicle of long, tiring days reminiscent of captivity because these are spent telling legends, excavating, placing dynamite, and waiting for fish to rise to the bait or for a pig to fall in a trap and become food. Never mind that, instead of Tortuga, the location is the less exotic Black Sea, and the menace is not the looming fleet of an enemy admiral but the scheduled building of a luxury resort: adventure is a way of living!
