TROPICÁLIA
Brazil 2012 87'
2012 Sunday, November 11th, Odeon, 9:15
Directed by: Marcelo Machado
Tropicália was the name of one of Hélio Oiticica’s works, an installation of strong impact which also inspired Caetano Veloso the title of his song. Tropicália thus became the term used to describe the new Brazilian artistic movement – a free movement encompassing music, cinema, theatre, visual arts and poetry. Machado’s film portrays the story of the movement starting from the late Sixties. Through an extraordinary collection of materials, the film reconstructs one of the most intense and exciting periods in the history of Brazilian arts. The story of Tropicália is narrated through the voices of its protagonists, Caetano, Gil, Tom Zé. As they speak, the film shows mostly unpublished or rare images. From a young Maria Bethânia filmed by Julio Bressane and Paulo Sarraceni, to the hippie wedding of Caetano, to the sequences shot at the Isle of Wight Festival, watching Tropicália will be a joy of the senses for all those who love Brazilian music and culture.
