On the occasion of the retrospective "The Living Landscape: the Cinema of Dominique Marchais" at the 59th Festival dei Popoli.

“I discovered the countryside during my childhood: the landscapes and the habits, the cows and the poultry, the hunting, the rhythm of seasons dictated by agriculture. Then the landscape has changed: new people have arrived and new buildings have been built. In trying to face the grief for this changes I shoot in different parts of Europe, while the changes were taking place, in order to understand what happened to us.” (D. Marchais)

The Living Landscape: The Cinema of Dominique Marchais

LA MÉCANIQUE DES CORPS

Directed by: Matthieu Chatellier (France, 2016, 78’)

The human body is a complex machine. Each individual replicates a universal model inflected according to a single variation. In a special centre, experts study leg and arm amputations to bridge any possible anatomical gap. Prosthetics are built and adapted to reproduce the mechanics of the missing limb, trying to imitate its unique harmony.

Wednesday, November 7th, Istituto Francese, 5:00pm

LA LIGNE DE PARTAGE DES EAUX

Directed by: Dominique Marchais (France, 2013, 108’)

Along the Loire, the film-maker meets farmers and scholars, writers and urban planners. They discuss the transformation, vitality, and suffering of the landscape of the French countryside. The river that joins the dots of the itinerary becomes the metaphor of a flow of bodies, words, and places, pieced together through the editing to create a both real and mental landscape – the locus of politics.

Wednesday, November 7th, Istituto Francese, 6:30pm - With the director in-person and with Francesco Ferrini (UniFi)
