TUESDAY DECEMBER 2nd, ODEON CINEMA
AS CIDADES E AS TROCAS
A film by Luísa Homem and Pedro Pinho (Portugal, 2014, 139’)
Odeon - 4.00 pm - With the film producer Joao Matos
In 2008 the damages of the tourism industry to Cabo Verde culminated into a severe geological crisis due to the alarming erosion of beaches. Through the observation and the reconstruction of the daily routes of goods loaded on huge cargo ships, sailing from Lisbon and headed to the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, we can notice the physical and social changes of the landscape caused by such exchanges and mass tourism.
15 CORNERS OF THE WORLD
A film by Zuzanna Solakiewicz (Poland, 2014, 79')
Odeon - 6.45 pm - With the director in-person
The whole world surrounding us, plants and insects, micro-organisms and big predators, the sky and the ground, the streets of our cities and the performance of some dancers combine in a spectacular choreography going along with the sensitive compositions of Eugeniusz Rudnik, a pioneer of electroacoustic music.
YAAR
A film by Simon Gillard (Belgium, 2004, 19')
Odeon - 9.00 pm - With the director in-person
The gold-diggers of Burkina Faso in an elegy of colors, sounds and gestures of work. In a wonderful alternation of light and shadows, bodies without roughness move rhythmically and faintly to make time and space a visual as well as sensory experience. Yaar is the center of a mine, a separate universe shining by its own light.
FINDING FELA
A film by Alex Gibney (USA, 2014, 119')
Odeon - 9.00 pm
An extremely talented musician, a performer with an alluring charisma and a magnetic scenic presence, an unrelenting human rights activist, a supporter of the Panafrican movement, a fearless revolutionary spirit: Fela Kuti (1938-1997) was, over his entire career and life, one of the loudest voices of an Africa fired up by anti-colonial movements and rebellions against dictatorships. This biography is matched with the video shootings performed during the rehearsals of FELA!, the Musical, which had its debut in Broadway in 2009 achieving an extraordinary success.
