OPENING FILM: "LAST HIJACK"

LAST HIJACK
by Tommy Pallotta and Femke Wolting (Netherlands/Ireland/Germany/Belgium, 2014, 83')
Friday, November 28th, Odeon, 9:00 pm

The encounter between documentary and animated film generated Last Hijack, whose protagonists are a group of Somali pirates and their leader, Mohamed. For years these men, equipped with light boats and rickety weapons, endangering their own and others' lives storming the oil tankers sailing the waters around the Horn of Africa. In their home country these men have earned a controversial reputation: they are lawless and unscrupulous, it is true, but the money accumulated and the aura of danger surrounding their deeds gives them a grim fascination. Today the life of Mohamed seems to be at a crossroads: on the one hand the parents and the impending marriage led him to embrace a quiet life, on the other hand it seems that the "hijack fever" continues to burn beneath his skin.

"We didn't want to make an observational documentary. Because the hijacks were something you could never be part of. Once we thought to combine animation and documetary footage this opened up so many possibilities." (T. Pallotta & F. Wolting)

The action scenes, based on the testimonies of the protagonists, are told with spectacular animation sequences based on the drawings by Hisko Hulsing.
