GENIUS VOCI - CALL FOR PARTICIPATION
GENIUS VOCI
Reflection-Production-Promotion Programme for New Creative Documentaries
# 1_How to film the search for a “Better Place”
By the first decade of the twenty-first century documentary was undergoing a profound change in its direction of travel. The rethoric surrounding of the use of moving images as a tool of social action is meanwhile acquiring a fresh lease of life. The notion of social engaged documentary is not new, but now the very idea of the ‘documentarist’ as a species of professional communicator (author, activist, artist, etc.) is being called into question more comprehensively than before.
Community needs to map specific histories and stories (as well as “images”) into spaces colonised by the local powers, global corporate interests or environmental destruction also propel these new forms of documentary.
We believe that the challenge for contemporary filmmaker is to deal with these needs in order to find new ways to “film the search (and the struggle) for a better place”.
The Objectives
Genius Voci is an international Reflection-Production-Promotion Programme for New Creative Documentaries, initiated by Festival dei Popoli, Florence and Documentarist, Istanbul in the framework of Tandem EU-Turkey and supported by the ECF Amsterdam, Stiftung Mercator Essen, MitOst Berlin and Anadolu Kültür Istanbul.
The Programme wants to enable directors and artists to improve their skills in the field of Creative Documentary film making and to develope their projects in hand; therefore the following primary objectives are:
• to Promote a shared contemplation and to provide the opportunity of analysis and involvement with outstanding theoretical and methodological approaches (seminars) as well as with outstanding artistic works;
• to Activate a creative process between Italian-Turkish film makers on the multiple ways to build different “cinematic gazes” on the same topics;
• to Assist young as well as experienced authors and film makers during the stage of the idea-generation, project-planning, through the confrontation with film directors, festival managers, film producers and commissioning editors.
Target Group
The Call for Participation addresses documentary filmmakers in their early stage of career as well as professionals with a longer experience but with new ideas or new projects in mind. Premised a plausible motivation, the participation is also open to experienced professionals from other fields (e.g. art, photography…) who want to approach the genre. Participants are expected to contribute actively to the workshops through a combination of open critical response and reflection upon their own ideas and approaches.
The Workshops
The first edition of the programme consists in the implementation of two workshop units (WU1 and WU2) in Florence and in Istanbul
CALL FOR PARTICIPATION IS OPEN - DEADLINE: APRIL 13th, 2014:
