
51 Festival dei Popoli - A Presentation
The Italian Premiere of “When You’re Strange,” Tom DiCillo’s documentary about the American rock group The Doors and its frontman Jim Morrison will open the 51st Festival dei Popoli.
Among this year’s new attractions is the ITALIAN PANORAMA, a selection of the most significant Italian films made in this year.
PETER METTLER: EPIPHANIES AND REVELATIONS, showcasing the work of the acclaimed Canadian director, photographer, and interdisciplinary artist whose film “Petropolis” won the Fondazione Ente dello Spettacolo Award at the 50th Festival dei Popoli.
The retrospective for this 51st edition is dedicated to Swiss cinematography, a rich production of innovative and highly astonishing work. The retrospective, which will highlight films about exploration and travel, is called VOICES FROM AN INNER SPACE - SWISS DOCUMENTARY CINEMA: TRAVELLERS, MILITANS, VISIONARIES.
The OFFICIAL SELECTION categories have been confirmed: the Feature Film Competition will award sixteen previously unreleased feature films in Italy in the categories of “Best Film,” “Best Director” and “Best Ethno-Anthropological Film”; the Short Doc Competition, in which sixteen unreleased short films in Italy will compete for “Best Short Film”. All the films will compete for the Audience Award too.
The FREE STYLE section will return for its third consecutive year, dedicated to works that envisage the most original documentary form and pay close attention to contemporary themes.
Two initiatives to watch out for: the ITALIAN DOC SCREENINGS 2010 (November 17-20), the largest Italian documentary market, in which over 40 broadcasters from all over the world participate, made possible by Doc/it, FST - Mediateca Toscana Film Commission, the Department of Economic Development and ICE – the National Institute for Foreign Commerce; the TUSCAN STATE GENERAL FOR DOCUMENTARIES, organized by Documentaristi Anonimi - Associazione Documentaristi Toscani. The goal is to appraise the arts in a region seeking to promote “Cinema of the Real” in the future.
